Krutzen/McGhee Duo

“Flutist Lorna McGhee and harpist Heidi Krutzen were perfectly attuned to each other and to the music.” – Seattle Times

Heidi Krutzen and Lorna McGhee are re-envisioning the traditional flute and harp duo. Exploring the full expressive capabilities of their instruments, they are surprising audiences with a richness of sound, kaleidoscopic colours and dynamic range rarely heard from the flute and harp. Their fresh approach extends beyond interpretation to the commissioning of new works each year as part of a vibrant musical continuum.

Both Heidi and Lorna are accomplished soloists and orchestral musicians in their own right. Heidi recently recorded a concerto written for her by Mark Armanini with the Latvian National Symphony is Riga, Latvia. She is principal harpist of the Vancouver Opera Orchestra and has performed as guest principal with numerous orchestras including the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, CBC Radio Orchestra, Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and the Saskatoon Symphony. She recently played with the acclaimed Satie String Quartet at Festival Vancouver and will join forces with Jean Stillwell in 2006. Currently teaching at UBC, Lorna was formerly co-principal flutist of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, England, and has given concerto performances with the London Symphony, BBC Scottish Symphony, Manitoba Chamber Orchestra and Scottish Chamber Orchestra. In July 2004, at the Oregon Bach Festival, she had the privilege of performing the Penderecki Flute Concerto with Penderecki himself conducting. Lorna has made chamber music recordings for EMI, Decca, Naxos, ASV, and Meridian.

The scope of the Krutzen/McGhee Duo is international as well as local. Most recently they were featured in recital and as concerto soloists at the 2004 National Flute Convention, an event that draws an audience of thousands. At the gala concert, they performed Mozart’s Flute and Harp Concerto with the Nashville Chamber Orchestra. The Duo first performed this work with the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra in September 2000, and it was the success of this initial collaboration that led to the formation of a permanent duo. They have since given recitals throughout Western Canada and have concerts planned throughout the 2004/05 season, notable a performance of Mozart’s Flute and Harp Concerto at the Oregon Bach Festival and an appearance at the World Harp Congress in Dublin. The Krutzen/McGhee Duo has been featured at chamber music festival in the United States and Canada including the Oregon Bach Festival, Vancouver Chamber Music Festival, Festival Vancouver, Seattle Chamber Music Festival and the Strings in the Mountains Festival in Colorado. Their performances have been broadcast on CBC, Netherlands Radio, and King FM radio stations. “Taheke – 20th Century Masterpieces for Flute and Harp” (SKY0401) is their first duo CD, recorded in March 2004 and released on Skylark Music.

The Duo has enjoyed collaborating with many distinguished string players, ensembles and choirs in the pursuit of interesting repertoire. Commissioning new works is an important part of the Duo’s make-up. In April 2003 they gave the world premiere of “Tāheke”, a work they commissioned from acclaimed New Zealand composer Gareth Farr. CBC Radio broadcast the self-presented concert and many representatives from the New Zealand consulate were present. Having been awarded a BC Arts Council grant to commission Canadian composer Owen Underhill, the Duo gave the world premiere of his new work “Canzone de Petra” along with Farr’s “Tāheke” in a “headliner concert” at the 2004 national Flute Association Convention in Nashville.

Known for their communicative skills, the Krutzen/McGhee Duo aims to raise the profile of their instruments, expand the repertoire through commissioning both Canadian and non-Canadian composer, and present relevant and vital programs in concert and on disc.
